Qualifications of a VD

Before we dive into the role, let’s discuss the prerequisites to becoming a Vocal Director at Awaken Church. When joining our worship team, we focus on three things as we prepare for the platform: aligning with Awaken culture, building excellence, and connecting with our team.

The qualifications of a VD are directly related to those values, while customizing each to a VDs’ unique role:

  • Align: We understand the spirit and vision God has for this house and our worship team with such excellence that we may lead our teammates by example.

  • Build: We carry enough excellence in our personal vocal development that we can speak into the vocal team with knowledge and authority.

  • Connect: We have relational equity and trust with our vocal team and can regularly speak into areas of opportunity and celebrate growth.

Our VDs will also have certain practical skills mastered, including but not limited to:

  • An ear to discern pitch, projection, tone, blending, consistency, phrasing and more to ensure a strong, unified sound.

  • Strong communication, both written (for text, Slack and PCO) and verbal (on the spot feedback and direction).

Success Measures of an VD

How does an VD know if they’re successful? This can ultimately be summed up in two goals:

The Worship Leader can trust the VD is managing vocal aspects to their vision and all vocal question marks with the team have been ironed out into exclamation points, yielding great fruit in the vocal team.
