When adjusting your in-ear mix, you’ll often hear the phrase “functional, not perfect”. This does not mean suffering through a challenging mix that does not allow you to hear what you need, but more so to prioritize what you do need, in order to bring your best (For an in-depth IEM training guide, click here).

There are times where we can err on the side of personal preference to ensure our individual output is excellent, and there are times where we must prepare a mix to meet the role we are carrying. For example, a Worship Leader carries the mantle of leading the team in service, so they must ensure certain aspects of their mix are extremely dialed in.

As VD, while hearing yourself is of course important, you must ensure you have an accurate mix of other vocalists as well. This will allow you to not only give individual feedback to each vocalist, but also so you can steward the united voice of the team.
