The relationship between the Vocal Director and the Worship Leader is crucial to there being unity of vision for vocals, as well as in the complete worship experience! We mentioned earlier that one of the main success measures for a VD is the Worship Leader feels supported and followed. At our church, the rostered Worship Leader for a service carries the mantle of authority and responsibility for the tone and direction of the set, while the VD is responsible for executing and translating that vision vocally to the FLV team.

Once the Worship Leader has finalized their set, they will notify their VD and MD by Tuesday evening for Sunday service, and Friday evening for Wednesday service. If you have not received word from your WL by the deadline, it is part of the VD role to reach out and check the status of the setlist.

As soon as possible, the VD will ask any necessary questions of the Worship Leader regarding parts, vocal arrangements, and overall vision. Your WL may have a specific arrangement in mind for a certain song, or they may release you to arrange every song in the set. The goal is to receive a clear picture from the WL first, then execute your VD responsibilities- remember, you are in charge of all vocal details! If your WL has made their vision clear, don’t be afraid to explore your creativity in the authority of the VD role.
