Qualifications of an MD

Before we dive into the role, let’s discuss the prerequisites to becoming a Music Director at Awaken.  Stepping back to the bigger picture, our Orientation process as a team has us focus on three things as we prepare to join the rest of the team on the platform: Align with our Culture, Build Excellence, and Connect with the Team.  The qualifications for leadership on the team are directly related to those and take each to the next level:

• We need to understand and carry the spirit and vision of the house and our team well enough to lead others in it.

• We need to carry enough excellence in our individual contributorship role that we’re able to think big picture and listen to all the other instruments and speak into them as we are playing

• We need to have enough relationship equity/trust built up with the team that we can speak into areas of our team members.

Success Measures of an MD

How does an MD know if they’re successful?  There are so many things an MD does for a service, but ultimately, we can sum it up in three goals:

• Making sure the Worship Leader feels supported and followed

• Making sure the team is being the musical amen to everything happening on the platform

• All question marks with the team have been ironed out into exclamation points!

Throughout these training courses, most of the topics will relate to one of these success measures.
